Beiteddine, Lebanon, 2011 // Stabat Mater

The Beiteddine Festival is one of the leading festivals in the Middle East. Stabat Mater, A christian and muslim praise to the Virgin Mary.

Julien Jallaleddine Weiss and the Al-Kindi Ensemble, the Byzantine Choir Tropos from Athens, the muezzin Bekir Buyukbashafiz from the Sultan Fethi mosque in Istanbul, Sheikh Habboush and the Munshids of the Sufi orders of Qaderi and Rifai in Aleppo accompanied by the Whirling Dervishes Mawlawi.

Created for the Fes Sacred Music Festival, this is a hymn to Mariam’s maternal figure that is the legacy of both religions, Christian and Muslim. More than 40 participants in a fascinating evening of liturgical music uniting Byzantine chants, Oriental Maqams, Sufi incantations and Whirling Dervishes.
